Climate Initiative Highlights

Highlighted department initiatives that increase local renewable energy production, reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. View our Climate Initiatives webpage for other initiatives, projects, and programs.

Bike Trails

Bike Trails

We support community emission reductions by investing in bike trails on county land and providing matching grant funding through the PARC & Ride Grant Program to help local municipalities develop new regional bicycle/pedestrian trails.

Renewable Natural Gas - Manure Digesters

When manure breaks down it produces methane, a greenhouse gas, which can be collected, cleaned and converted into energy for residential or business use. We currently have two manure digesters operating in Dane County that capture methane gas.

Vehicle Emission Reduction

We have transitioned part of our vehicle fleet to compressed natural gas (CNG), converted some park maintenance equipment to electric, and provided telecommuting opportunities to staff. Also, Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations are available at some parks and facilities.
