Salt Wise on Tap at Starkweather Brewing Co.

Event Dates

  • Tuesday, 01/24/2023 7:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Event Description

Relax, enjoy a pint, and learn from local experts about current salt levels and what is being done to prevent further damage.

Hilary Dugan, Associate Professor of Limnology at UW-Madison, will explain why salt is so bad for lakes and rivers (and drinking water) in Wisconsin, is it really a problem (yes), and where do we go from here?

Mike Rupiper, Deputy Agency Director of the Capital Area Regional Planning Commission, will describe chloride concentrations in Starkweather Creek and the Commission's work with local stakeholders and citizen scientists in the Starkweather Creek watershed to develop and implement a Chloride Management Plan in the watershed.

Julia Whidden, Citizen Science Coordinator at the UW-Arboretum, will discuss the Arboretum’s Lake Wingra Springs Monitoring Project, an ongoing citizen science effort that focuses on chloride contamination in eight of the groundwater springs around Lake Wingra. Data for this project has been collected since 2001 and shows increasing levels of chloride in all springs.

We welcome questions and envision concluding the hour with a mix of large group discussion and facilitated small group conversations focused on action steps in our communities.
