EARTH DAY RESTORATION ACTIVITIES AT PRAIRIE MORAINE COUNTY PARK

MADISON, WI – April 22, 2021 - Prairie Moraine Friends and Dane County Parks are hosting an Earth Day event for Operation Fresh Start participants, youth ages 16-24. The majority of the volunteer activities will take place at Prairie Moraine County Park, within the off-leash dog park. Volunteers will help with prairie seed planting, tree planting and other park maintenance. These activities are part of a larger restoration project to remove invasive species and restore the natural communities within the park. Volunteers will work from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. during which time the park will be closed to the public.

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi will speak to the volunteers at 2:00 p.m. about Earth Day and to thank them for their hard work within the Dane County Park System.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Prairie Moraine County Park Restoration
Dane County Parks staff and volunteers have worked for several years to restore the three primary natural resources communities that existed historically in the park: prairie, oak savanna/opening, and oak woodland. The restored landscape will provide improved ecosystem benefits, such as water infiltration and pollinator habitat, and also offer visitors a biologically diverse landscape to explore. Additional information is available on the project webpage.

Operation Fresh Start Partnership
The County has partnered with Operation Fresh Start Conservation Crews for several years to help ready them for potential careers with Dane County Parks and other forestry, landscaping, agriculture, and conservation related employment fields.
