County to Begin Annual Lowering of Yahara Lake Levels

Madison -- Dane County Land and Water Resources Department Director Kevin Connors has announced that Department staff will begin the annual “drawdown” or lowering of the water levels in lakes Mendota, Monona, Waubesa, and Kegonsa on November 1st. Connors advises that all riparian property owners or those who moor their watercraft plan for the lowering of the lakes. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources requires Dane County to lower the water levels of the lakes after November 1st to prevent ice damage to the shoreline and to provide for flood storage capacity during the spring runoff.
