Now is the time for communities to apply for gypsy moth suppression assistance for the spring of 2009, states Darren Marsh Dane County’s Gypsy Moth Coordinator. The deadline for Local Units of Government (LUG) to participating in the 2008-2009 Suppression Program is Friday, November 14, 2008. All Local Units of Government within Dane County are eligible to participate in the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) 2008-2009 Gypsy Moth Suppression Program, said Marsh. The WDNR Suppression Program is administered through the County. According to Marsh, this last spring there were 23 sites covering over 2,400 acres treated. Sites included the City of Madison (12 locations), City of Monona (1), City of Middleton (1), Town of Middleton (1), City of Sun Prairie (2), Lake Kegonsa State Park (1), University of Wisconsin-Campus (2), University of Wisconsin-Arboretum (2) and Village of Shorewood Hills (1). In the past, there has been federal cost-share grant assistance dollars available to help offset a portion of the program costs. In 2008, the grant dollars helped offset about 30% of spraying costs. The minimum criteria used to determine whether a community has a potential treatment site is that the infestation area must be a minimum of 20 contiguous acres and a have a minimum number of gypsy moth egg masses (500 to 1000 egg mass per acre) within the designated area. See the application website at http://dnr.wi.gov/org/caer/cfa/lr/gypsy/moth.html for more detailed information on eligibility.
