Engineering Services

The Department offers engineering services for many agricultural conservation practices that receive cost-share funding. These services include: survey, design, and construction oversight.

Survey

Surveying involves documenting the relative position of different features using direct or indirect measurements. It is the basis for the development of plans, maps, and designs for a conservation practice. Survey equipment and tools can vary. Staff use highly accurate GPS (satellite based) and conventional line-of-sight survey equipment. In some cases, drones can be used to assist in the survey of a site.

Design

Once a survey is completed and the data has been collected, staff develop a design for a conservation practice.  This may include maps, engineering calculations, cost-estimates, materials, and schematics for construction. The Department uses several different software programs including AutoCAD and ArcGIS to develop most designs.  These designs are then reviewed for accuracy and approved by the landowner before the construction stage.

Construction Oversight

During the construction stage of a project, staff monitor the progress and ensure the design is being followed. Staff are available to attend pre-construction meetings to help review the construction documents with the landowner and contractor(s).  Once construction is complete, another survey may be conducted in order to document the completed project.
